Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar will send the top two winners of the competition for a summer scholarship in New York City. Under the generous sponsorship of Dr. Ronald G. Crystal, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Genetic Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, "Healing Hands" essay contest winners will spend two weeks in research laboratories with prominent researchers and at the hospital with distinguished Weill Cornell Physicians. Each winner will be allowed to bring one guardian and will also receive a $1000.00 stipend, economy round trip airfare, and lodging in Manhattan.

How to Enter: The year’s theme is "Healing Hands: being a doctor in Qatar." Please write a thoughtful essay describing why you or anyone else should become a doctor in Qatar. Some questions you may wish to consider:

  • What does it mean to be a doctor in Qatar?
  • What particular issues might affect a doctor who practices in Qatar?
  • Does Qatar need more doctors?

Terms and Conditions:

  • Competition is open to all students currently enrolled in high schools in Qatar;
  • Writers must have lived in Qatar a minimum of 10 years;
  • Essay must be original work and written in English;
  • Essay must be between 800 and 1500 words in length;
  • Student and guardian must be eligible to receive a travel visa to the USA;
  • Travel Dates are July 20 - August 2, 2008 and may not be changed;
  • Housing, airfare, transfers, stipend and visa costs are included in the scholarship for the winner and one guardian. Incidental costs, meal, medical insurance, travel insurance and activities are the responsibility of the scholarship winner and the guardian;
  • Scholarship is non-transferable and will be awarded to the runner-up in the event the winner(s) cannot attend the research dates.
