Clerkship Overview

Welcome to the Ob/Gyn rotation! Obstetrics and Gynecology is a specialty unlike medicine and the medical subspecialties or surgery and the surgical subspecialties. The discipline combines areas of medicine, pediatrics, surgery, embryology, genetics, endocrinology, radiology, oncology, urology, human sexuality and preventive medicine into a field, which can provide total health care for women during their lifetime. Most Ob/Gyn's concentrate on areas related to women's reproduction and related matters, however, the training of an Ob/Gyn encompasses all areas of health care, from a young woman in adolescence to the mature woman experiencing changes related to her age.

There are 4 recognized subspecialties in the field of Ob/Gyn - Maternal-Fetal Medicine (also called High Risk Obstetrics), Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, Gynecologic Oncology, and Urogynecology & Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. Residents in Ob/Gyn are trained for 4 years after medical school in all areas of Ob/Gyn, including these subspecialties. If a resident chooses to specialize in one of these areas, an additional 3 to 5 years of training is added.

Every attempt is made for students to experience all areas of Ob/Gyn - from the basics of well woman care to the delivery of infants and everything in between. There is a lot to learn in 6 weeks and our goal is to give the students the basic skills and knowledge to be able to approach any field of medicine and be confident about their ability to perform a pelvic exam and answer basic questions about women's health.
