Facilities of WCMC-Q
High-speed Internet connectivity enables faculty, students and staff to maintain close links with colleagues overseas. To give one example, videoconferencing technology provides for delivery of live lectures from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York and Cornell University in Ithaca to students in the classroom in Doha.
Among the most outstanding features are:
- Lecture halls equipped with an integrated system of electronic teaching tools controlled from the lectern, and audio response system and laptop connectivity for students. Three rear projectors allow for simultaneous use of a variety of resources. Facilities include advanced communications and A/V solutions, Internet access, and provision for CD, VCR and DVD presentations.
- Seminar rooms designed to facilitate learning in small groups, equipped with Apple Macintosh computers with flat-panel retractable monitors – providing ideal, flexible spaces for the problem-based learning and journal clubs that are integral to the medical curriculum.
- A Clinical Skills Center (CSC) inside the North Hall, extensively used from Year 1 of the Medical Program to support the training and assessment of WCMC-Q's medical students in the art and science of patient care. The CSC has six doctors’ offices and a sophisticated electronic monitoring system for use by faculty.
- Over 38,000 sq ft (3,500 sq m) of laboratory space, with 9,500 sq ft (880 sq m) of prep rooms. Spacious, fitted with ceiling reflected lighting to avoid glare and superbly equipped, the labs offer an optimal environment for pre-medical students to develop their skills of method and analysis in experimental science.
- Up to 40,000 sq ft (3,600 sq m) of research laboratories. In an initial phase, one section of the research facilities was commissioned in summer 2006. Working with Qatar Foundation, WCMC-Q is developing core laboratory capabilities, including genomics and proteomics cores, computational biology and biostatistics core, a vivarium, microscopy core and a basic laboratory support core. These will be available to colleagues at our sister institutions in Education City, in order to encourage a collaborative research effort.
- A Distributed eLibrary accessed via computers throughout the building, via the wireless network or by remote connection. This is the gateway to a wealth of information resources held by WCMC-Q, Cornell University, Weill Cornell Medical College and its affiliates, and Hamad Medical Corporation.
